Common Names: Bird of Paradise, Crane Flower

Description: Each of these large, bright-orange tropical flowers is streaked with purple and white and sit atop thick, sturdy stalks that can reach 4 feet in length. One of the petals in each of these flowers is modified into a Blue structure called the tongue, which houses the male and female parts of the flower.

Facts: One of the most spectacular, colorful and beautiful exotic flowers in the world. One of the only flowers actually pollinated by birds, the strelitzia is named “Bird of Paradise” because of its spectacular shape which resembles a bird’s beak and head plumage. Its blossoms, when fully opened, have the appearance of the wings of a bird in flight. The overall effect is a striking crest of orange and blue with a definite tropical look.
